Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is psychological problem in which individuals exhibit repetitive checking behaviors and/or report recurrent and persistent thoughts. Compulsions include checking to see if the door was locked, hand washing, putting things in a specific order, and mental acts suchs as counting. Obsessions are persistent thoughts that are associated with anxiety and are usually difficult for the individual to suppress. Often times the person with OCD will perform the compulsion to alleviate the obsessive thought, even though they may be aware that the thought is irrational.
Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) can alleviate these symptoms by teaching the individual coping skills or through more intensive treatments such as exposure with response prevention. Research has demonstrated that CBT is an effective method to reducing the OCD symptoms. | * For information Call 212 580-4095 or 516 592-7404 to speak with Dr. Kassinove
